How to Keep Herbaceous Borders Looking Their Best

The best borders are not the ones with the rarest plants. They are the ones that are managed attentively through the season.
Support early
Stake in April and May, before plants need it. Supports put in after a plant has flopped never look natural and rarely work.
Deadhead and cut back
Regular deadheading extends flowering considerably. Geraniums, nepeta and alchemilla can be cut back hard after their first flush and will produce fresh foliage and a second showing.
Divide on a cycle
Most perennials benefit from division every three to five years. Congested clumps flower less and open out in the middle — divide in autumn or early spring and replant the vigorous outer sections.
